Vlašim Castle was built on the site of a Gothic castle built in 1303 , which was initially replaced by a Renaissance castle around 1600 . In the 19th century it was changed to its present form by the princes of Auersperg , who owned the castle until 1945. Today the castle houses the Blaník Region Museum, which also includes an exhibition on the history of the castle and park. Furthermore, a museum about the local ammunition manufacturer Sellier & Bellot is maintained in the castle . The castle tower serves as a lookout tower.

park

From 1775, Karl Josef von Auersperg and his wife Maria Josefine von Trautson laid out an English landscape garden in the nearby valley of the Blanice river on the site of a former pheasant enclosure and castle garden in the geometric style , to which various staffage structures were gradually added. Some of the buildings, e.g. B. a Chinese style pavilion , an artificial ruin , a statue of Samson and three neo-Gothic gates have been preserved; a mosque , an obelisk , a grotto and an amort temple in a small lake are no longer available . The 70 hectare park, which at the time was praised as one of the most beautiful in all of Bohemia , is nevertheless one of the best preserved parks from the romantic phase of landscape gardens in Central Europe. The park buildings are now used as exhibition rooms and restaurants.

The park and the castle are open to the public, guided tours through the park and some of its buildings are offered for a fee. There is a gallery in the Vlašim Gate and a collection of engravings showing the historical park in the Old Castle. A 3 km long educational trail about the sights of Vlašim and the surrounding area leads through the park.
