The Deutsche Hausschatz was a family magazine founded during the Kulturkampf (19th century), which was created as a Catholic alternative to the magazine Die Gartenlaube . The German Hausschatz soon became one of the most common German-language magazines. It appeared under different title variants and with several interruptions as a weekly magazine from 1874 to 1953 in the Regensburger Verlag by Friedrich Pustet (today Friedrich Pustet KG ). After it was founded by Pustet and until 1910, the paper was called Deutscher Hausschatz in words and pictures , then with the beginning of the 37th year (October 1910 - October 1911) Deutscher Hausschatz - Illustrated Family Magazine . The follow-up publication was called Hausschatz and appeared from 1953 to 1960.

In addition to its basic Catholic attitude, the German household treasure was always oriented towards conservative values. One of its editors, Alfons Heilmann , wrote in September 1934:

“The reason for the flight of so many girls and young women from domestic life was also borne by the notion, torn with modern pleasure, that the quiet, selfless, caring behavior of the mother in the household and family was boring, degrading and numbing. [...] But haven't millions of capable, full-fledged women of all centuries found full satisfaction and a happy purpose in life in looking after their families? "

Karl May was one of the early regular authors . He published numerous travel novels from 1879 to 1898 and again from 1907 to 1909, e. B. the Orient cycle (1881–1888). The magazine played a pioneering role by showing illustrations in relatively good print quality right from the start, which set it apart from the newspapers of its time. From around 1900 photographs increasingly replaced the reproductions of paintings and graphics.

The word “house treasure” was common in the 19th century for upscale literature and music. There were countless individual publications with "Hausschatz" in the title, such as the New German House Treasure for Friends of the Arts and Sciences from 1864, the New Poetic House Treasure from 1880, the Humouristic House Treasure by Wilhelm Busch or the House Treasure of Knowledge - Development History of Nature from 1896.
