German Maiskommitee

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Maiskomitee eV (DMK) is an agricultural interest group based in Bonn . The statutory task of the DMK is to support maize breeding, cultivation and utilization in all areas with information and technical advice.

history

The association was founded on January 18, 1956 and was able to build on the work of the German Hybrid Maize Working Group that had been founded six years earlier . This had started with targeted advice on the cultivation and import of maize seeds and set hybrid maize breeding in motion in Germany. Werner Schulze from Frankfurt was the first chairman and also managing director . With the general meeting on August 27, 1957 in Hanover, these tasks were separated in terms of personnel and the German Agricultural Society (DLG) agreed to provide management by its employee Jost von Lochow. The focus of the first few years was the organization of the import of seed maize, the establishment of a hybrid maize breeding facility in Germany, trials of varieties to examine the suitability of cultivation, tests and studies of the feed value and economic aspects of maize cultivation. The corn cultivation area grew rapidly in the following years and steadily expanded the range of tasks of the DMK. In the phase of increasing tasks and activities, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the DLG no longer saw themselves in a position to support the German Maize Committee to the extent necessary. For this reason, a new concept with a statute, work and financing plan was presented to the general meeting on September 26, 1972 in Nienburg. The core of the new organization was the hiring of a full-time managing director, the establishment of a separate office and the creation of specialist committees. With the establishment of an EU variety test, the variety system came to the fore at the end of the 1980s and made it necessary to found the DMK service unit Pro-Corn GmbH in 1993 . To this day, the German Maize Committee is a registered association with members from all areas of agriculture.

aims

According to its own statements, the association pursues exclusively charitable goals. The most important characteristics of the work of the DMK are the development and dissemination of information, the coordination of test and research projects and the dialogue with politics and society.

tasks

The statutory task of the association is to support the cultivation of maize and its utilization in all areas with information and technical advice. The specialist committees and working groups provide the basis for this. In particular, the following activities are carried out by the DMK:

  • Coordination and publication of the results of the suitability tests of maize varieties
  • Implementation of experimental projects in cooperation with the members
  • Organization of specialist conferences and discussion groups
  • Mediation of international contacts
  • Publication of information for the practice (magazine mais, sortenspiegel.de, maisprog.de, brochures, publications, newsletters)
  • Press work to promote the dialogue between society and agriculture

Members

The DMK brings together farmers, representatives of official advice and administration, science, maize breeding and agriculturally oriented companies. All groups and institutions involved in the breeding, cultivation and utilization of maize therefore work together in the DMK. Around 500 individuals and around 80 companies, associations and institutions are currently members of the DMK.

Committees and working groups

In order to create a lively exchange between the members and institutions as well as to make current questions and new knowledge of maize cultivation accessible to everyone, there are regular lecture events and practitioner days. These events are carried out by the specialist committees and their working groups. Technical committees of the DMK are:

  • Feed preservation and feeding
  • information and communication
  • Economy and market
  • Cultivation systems and sustainability
  • Breeding, varieties and seeds

Sponsorship award

Since 1998, the DMK has been awarding a sponsorship award to young scientists who deal with the topic of maize in their theses and thus make a contribution to scientific and technical progress. Since 2011, in addition to dissertations, bachelor / master theses have also been awarded in a separate category. The award, which is endowed with a cash prize, is presented annually on the occasion of the DMK annual conference.

German corn club

In 1976, in addition to the DMK, the German Corn Club (DMC) was established, which was particularly committed to the spread of new three-way hybrids for silage production in Germany. Blizzard maize , for example, belonged to this group of varieties . The actors Urs Roland Berger (management), Helmuth Isselhorst (general secretary) and Manfred Raupp (member of the board) organized 20 years of specialist excursions to European maize growing areas. Since the turn of the century, the senior members have met annually to exchange experiences in different regions of Germany. The association was dissolved on June 21, 2017 in Karlsruhe after the achievement of the association's goals was determined.

International Corn and Information Ring (IMIR)

In the 1960s, farmers and consultants from southern Baden, Alsace and northern Switzerland founded the International Corn and Information Ring (IMIR). Its members meet for annual conferences and excursions. In addition, the IMIR organizes its own variety trials.
