The German war cemetery Fort de Malmaison is a resting place for 11,841 German soldiers who died in the Second World War in France . It is located in the north of the Île de France region on the Chemin des Dames mountain range in the Aisne department, near the former Fort de la Malmaison, which was heavily contested in both world wars .

location

The war cemetery is located 20 km south of the city of Laon . From the Laon - Soissons road , after about 19 km, turn left onto Chemin des Dames . After about 2 km the cemetery is on the left.

dead

The first dead were buried in 1941 after the fighting over the heights of the Aisne Valley. More dead were brought here by the French burial service after 1945. Starting in the summer of 1960, the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge transferred a further 6,800 dead from the Aisne and surrounding Aube , Loire , Oise , Seine-et-Marne and Yonne departments. The German soldiers who died in the Allied offensive in 1944, especially during the breakthrough at Avranche and in the Battle of the Bulge, are buried here.

The graves are marked by cast-iron crosses on a green lawn with trees. The name, date of birth and death of the dead are noted on the base. There is a memorial hall with a high cross on the edge of the site.
