The German war cemetery Hooglede is a cemetery of honor in Hooglede , Belgium , 6 kilometers northwest of Roeselare (Roulers). It is located at the eastern exit of the village. It is the resting place for 8,241 German soldiers of the First World War .

layout

The cemetery was initially laid out in 1917 by the German troops. After the end of the First World War, only 4,100 dead were buried here. The cemetery was expanded by the “Official German Grave Service” between the two world wars. The large arch hall made of Ibbenbürener sandstone was created from the material of the German pavilion, which was demolished after the 1937 Paris World Exhibition .

Amalgamation

In 1954 it was agreed to amalgamate the numerous small German military cemeteries that had been scattered as a result of the war. Accordingly, between 1956 and 1958 the German soldiers who were killed in the 128 cemeteries that were still in existence were brought together to four German military cemeteries in Flanders: Langemark , Menen , Vladslo and Hooglede.

reconciliation

After a thorough renovation, the cemetery was reopened on May 5, 2012. The Province of West Flanders and the municipality of Hooglede covered 80% of the costs of the renovation. Children from Hooglede and Gits , the Flemish Vice Prime Minister, the Mayor of Hooglede and German participants attended the inauguration ceremony.

Historic monument

In 2008 the cemetery was classified as a Historic Monument by the Belgian Monument Protection Agency for its historical, cultural and architectural value.
