The German Textile Cleaning Association e. V. ( DTV ) is an employers and trade association in the textile service industry in Germany with its headquarters in Bonn . Over 800 laundries , dry cleaners and textile service companies have come together under the umbrella of the DTV. As the largest association for the textile service industry in Europe, the DTV represents the interests of its members in trade , professional and economic policy . In addition, advising and supporting the individual members are central tasks of the association.

The association

According to its own information, DTV represents around 85 percent of the German market turnover in the textile service industry in Germany. The association is the largest national industry association in Europe and, after the TRSA, the world's second largest association for the textile service industry. As an association, the DTV has a targeted and effective influence on collective bargaining, labor and social policy legislation. To this end, it works together with the Central Association of German Crafts, negotiates its own collective bargaining agreements and maintains contemporary networking with other associations, institutes and bodies. The aim is to strengthen the market and economic presence of the textile service industry as a whole and to represent the interests of the industry on a technical, competition law, professional and craft policy or political level.

In addition, the association informs its members about current and industry-relevant legislative changes and conducts training courses and seminars. The association also serves as an exchange platform for members and suppliers, in which the future of the industry can be actively shaped.

Organs of the association

The supreme body of the association is the general meeting , which is composed of individual members and corporate members and takes place once a year. Every three years the president and the executive committee are elected here.

For the exchange of information between the members, the DTV has a large number of working groups in which the DTV members exchange information on certain key issues. The committees and the advisory board are composed of competent experts and advise the Presidium in their respective areas of expertise.

The office takes care of all these activities administratively, initiates new projects and offers DTV members a wide range of services and framework agreements . The DTV operates three offices in Berlin , Bonn and Frankfurt am Main .

Regional associations and guilds

The state associations and guilds represent the textile cleaning trade at state and regional level. They work with state parliaments, state ministries, business associations and the chambers of crafts and are also responsible for training the next generation on site.

Committees and specialist groups

The DTV committees are an opportunity for the members of the association to bring themselves and their interests directly into the association's work and thus to exercise their corporate responsibility. At the same time, the committees form the technical backbone of the association's work. In order to advance association topics and initiate new projects, there are currently five fixed committees within the DTV, which are composed of several expert experts. They advise the Presidium in their respective areas of expertise and can also form sub-committees on specific issues:

  • Technology and environmental protection
  • Corporate Social Responsibility - CSR
  • Marketing and PR
  • Accounting

In a steadily growing number of specialist groups and working groups within the DTV, member companies and sponsors also exchange ideas on specific key topics. Solutions and positions on specific problems are sought together and important content-related work for the work of the DTV is carried out with the help of the expertise of the participants. These working groups concerning special interests are organized in the ETWGmbH - a 100 percent subsidiary of the DTV.

Working group of juniors

The working group of juniors (AKJ) has been one of the established bodies of the DTV since the beginning. At the six-monthly meetings, young entrepreneurs gather information on current specialist topics and at the same time promote a friendly exchange. The AKJ stands above all for the exchange with like-minded people. At the AKJ, tomorrow's executives have the opportunity to exchange ideas about their operational experiences and problems in a relaxed atmosphere.

Tariff Political Working Group Textile Cleaning (TATEX)

The "Tariff Political Working Group Textile Cleaning" (TATEX) is the body within the DTV in which the collective bargaining policy of the association and the industry is actively discussed and shaped. A collective bargaining commission is regularly elected from among the TATEX members and leads the collective bargaining on behalf of all members. Common goal of TATEX and its trade union partner DHV - Die Berufsgewerkschaft e. V. is a balanced collective bargaining policy that takes into account the interests of both employers and employees.

The current collective agreement runs from November 2017 to the end of December 2019. Over the total term of the collective agreement of 26 months, wages rise in two phases. In the first phase of the term (until December 31, 2018) wages will increase between 2.25% and 3.5% depending on the regional group. In a second phase (01.01.19 - 31.12.19) wages will rise by a further 2-3%.

According to the statutes, it is the task of the association to represent the common economic and ideal interests of its members vis-à-vis society, politics and trade unions. In particular, communication with customers, consumers and potential trainees is an important focus of the association's work. Targeted communication measures are intended to further increase the market presence and the success of the member companies. In addition, the advice and support of the individual members takes up a large part of the association's work. The office helps and provides information on business, professional, collective bargaining and social policy issues. In addition, the professional training of the managing directors and the employees in the member companies is an integral part of the association's work. There are regular seminars and workshops and the master craftsman training takes place under the direction of the association.

Friendly associations and cooperation partners

The DTV has a large network with research institutes, European umbrella associations as well as consumer, customer and supplier organizations with whom positions on factual issues are coordinated. The cooperation with the Central Association of German Crafts (ZDH) is particularly close . As a result of the cooperation, DTV has numerous important contacts in politics and learns early on of legal developments on the German and European level.

At the international and especially the European level, DTV is always looking for an exchange with other textile service branches. As the first German industry association, DTV has named a representative as an expert in the non-governmental organization Small Business Standards (SBS) in Brussels, who reports on the work on new industry-relevant EU standards. Since the beginning of 2017, DTV has even had two experts in the standardization bodies. As a member of the European Textile Services Association (ETSA), DTV is also actively involved in European lobbying.

Industry information

The textile service industry is characterized by great heterogeneity. From small dry cleaners as a two-man business to large industrial laundries with several hundred employees, a large number of different types and sizes of business are represented on the German market. As an employers and business association, the German Textile Cleaning Association represents around 800 primarily small and medium-sized companies.

Operating and sales figures

Reliable figures on the industry are currently difficult to obtain. In 2008, in the course of changes in the economic indicators in the EU - and thus also by the German Federal Statistical Office - companies in the textile service industry were partially assigned to other branches of the economy . That makes differentiated statements about the industry difficult. Numbers are now shown for the "laundry and dry cleaning" industry, on the other hand, a not inconsiderable part of the textile service is recorded in the economic code 77.2 "Rental of consumer goods", which, however, also includes non-textile consumer goods. In particular, companies from the textile service, which - according to the sales focus - are primarily assigned to the rental of other consumer goods, are in principle not to be recorded. All available figures on company figures and sales should therefore be interpreted with appropriate caution.

However, the number of companies has been decreasing continuously for years. Between 2010 and 2017 alone by around 19 percent. In 2017, the Federal Statistical Office counted fewer than 5,000 laundries and dry cleaners in Germany for the first time, namely only 4,918 companies. In addition to the closure of many small businesses - without new businesses being established in the immediate vicinity - there is an ever increasing market concentration in the area of ​​medium-sized businesses through mergers, mergers or acquisitions.

In 2016 the sales development was positive across all branches of industry. According to the Federal Statistical Office, sales of the handicraft cleaning and laundries increased to 3 billion euros. According to preliminary estimates by DTV, the sales volume for rental linen in Germany in 2018 was around 3.5 billion euros. However, there is also some overlap with the establishments recorded by the Federal Statistical Office.

Number of employees

Since laundries, textile service companies and dry cleaners can be run either as a craft or as an industrial and trading company, depending on the type of company, there are no central statistics on the number of employees in the textile service sector. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of employees in the craft-run companies increased slightly between 2008 and 2012 with an increase of around 1.5 percent.

According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), there were 68,815 people employed in the laundry and dry cleaning sector in 2016. The average of the companies employed 14.6 people. The structure of the working people is characterized by a high proportion of women of 67.5 percent.
