German Biomass Research Center

The German Biomass Research Center non-profit GmbH (DBFZ) is an institution for applied research in the Federal Republic of Germany based in Leipzig . According to his own statement, his research task is to " comprehensively support the efficient establishment of biomass as a valuable resource for sustainable energy supply in the context of applied research and to advance it theoretically and practically."

Founding history

The center was founded by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) on February 28, 2008 in Berlin as a non-profit GmbH. On March 17, 2008, the DBFZ acquired the former Institute for Energy and Environment gGmbH including the entire Leipzig property. On June 17, 2008, the two companies were merged.

The research focus of the 134 employees (2012) of the institution is

  • Bioenergy systems
  • Biochemical conversion
  • Thermo-chemical conversion and
  • Biorefineries .

Management and organization

The institute is managed by a scientific and an administrative manager. Currently (2019) these are the scientific managing director Michael Nelles and the administrative managing director Daniel Mayer.

The facility is divided into four research areas, the names of which correspond to the four main research areas.

The work of the center is accompanied and supported by a research advisory board made up of professors from German and foreign universities as well as scientists from research institutions.
