The German Research Center for Competitive Sports "Momentum" in Cologne is a sports science research institution. The research center is affiliated with the German Sport University Cologne .

history

The German Research Center for Competitive Sports was opened at the German Sport University Cologne in 2006, and for the first three years it was supported with 500,000 euros per year by the Sportstiftung NRW . In addition, the facility is funded by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia and commercial enterprises. The nickname “momentum” stands for “mass times speed”.

The research center is regarded as the "central scientific institution of the German Sport University Cologne", the responsible supervisory authority is the Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

There is a close cooperation between the research center, the institutes of the German Sport University, the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia , Olympic training centers as well as doctors and supervisors for athletes.

tasks

In 2016, the former chairman of the research center, Joachim Mester , formulated the fundamental question that led to the establishment of the facility with the words: "How can one increasingly incorporate scientific ideas into support in top-class sport?"

The institution specifies the following as its focus of work: basic, application and practical research, advice and support for top athletes, an in-depth examination ("basic check"), diagnostics and training camps, knowledge management, the processing and dissemination of research results via databases and the Internet and the holding of meetings and conferences.
