German Reichshühner are a breed of domestic fowl .

Origin and characteristics

The breed standard was developed in the 19th century when one wanted to breed more capable breeds. No indigenous land chicken strokes were used to breed the German Reichshuhn, but mainly breeds from the Asian race group such as the Sussex , Brahma and Orpington , but also Mediterranean breeds such as Minorka and Italians .

German Reichshühner have a rectangular body shape. The legs are not feathered. The breed is now bred in different colors.

German Reich chickens are characterized by good laying and fattening performance. They are therefore considered a dual-purpose breed . By their nature, they are considered trusting. Since they are considered a very robust breed, they are suitable for free-range husbandry.

Existence and endangerment

The German Reichshuhn is rare and is considered an endangered breed of domestic animal . The BDRG and the GEH have classified the breed in the " Red List of Endangered Livestock Breeds 2013 " in hazard class III (endangered). After that there were only 273 roosters and 1229 hens in Germany in 2009. It also exists as a German dwarf Reichshuhn in the dwarf form.
