features

Drawing of a black Minorka rooster with a white hen by Jean Bungartz (before 1885)

Minorka is available in black and white. The ear discs are an important breed characteristic . They should be about two thirds the length of the wattles. They are smooth, delicate, thick in the tissue, pure white, oval shaped and tightly fitting. This specialty sets the Minorka apart from all other poultry breeds.

The Minorka hen lays around 170 eggs in its first year of laying, each weighing up to 65 grams. In the second year, the laying capacity is 130 eggs, the eggs weigh 70 grams. Minorka used to be found on every farm; they were an industrial breed. They have been replaced by the current laying hybrids .

The rooster weighs between 2.5 and 3.5 kilograms, the hen between 2.25 and 3 kilograms. The tail of the roosters is full, of medium length and has many side sickles. In the hens the tail is strongly developed, but always carried closed. Minorka hens like to present themselves and begin to “sing”; it's not your typical cackle. The rooster crows very little compared to other breeds and also defends its chickens against predators. Minorka are very loyal to their owner.

Minorka are very closely related to the chicken breeds: Spaniards , Castilians and Andalusians .

They are also pioneers for many other races, e.g. B. German Reichshuhn , German Sparrowhawk , Augsburger , German Langschan , Orpington , Sachsenhuhn , black hamburgers and black Italians .

The recognized bantam breed Zwerg-Minorka , also looked after by the special association, is more common than the large breed.

Minorka with a rose comb were already considered extinct. They were exhibited again for the first time in a long time at the 2014 German Young Poultry Show in Hanover. Minorka with a single comb are included in the "List of indigenous livestock breeds in Germany" of the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food and the joint "List of old indigenous poultry breeds in Germany" from the Association of German Poultry Breeders (BDRG) and the Society for the Conservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Breeds (GEH) in Category I listed as "extremely endangered".
