List of breeds of chicken

The German salmon chicken is a breed of domestic chicken ( Gallus gallus domesticus ).

Origin and characteristics

Several mast races were involved in the creation of this breed, including Brahma and Dorking . The Houdan was also crossed here. German salmon chickens have a number of peculiarities. They have a beard fluff with a ruff on their head. This is due to the crossbreeding of Houdan chickens. While other breeds have four toes, the German salmon chicken is fifteen. Hens have salmon-colored plumage. The body fletching is very dense, although not as strongly developed as in Brahma or Cochin .

German salmon chickens are characterized by good laying and fattening performance. They are therefore considered a dual-purpose breed . By their nature, they are considered trusting. Since they have little tendency to fly, they are suitable for free-range husbandry.

Existence and endangerment

The German salmon grouse is rare and has been added to the list of endangered domestic animal breeds . The Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food lists the Barnevelders in the " Red List of Endangered Livestock Breeds 2013 " in the lowest hazard class V (little endangered). According to this, there were 422 roosters and 1804 hens in Germany in 2009. The German salmon chicken had previously been classified as "endangered" for a long time.

More common than the large breed is the recognized bantam breed, the German dwarf salmon chicken , which also exists in black.
