history
John Nichols founded Devon Energy with his son Larry in 1971 . In 1988 the company had 185 employees and went public in New York City. In 1992, Devon Energy acquired Hondo Oil & Gas . At the end of 1996 the oil and gas business was acquired by Kerr-McGee and in 1998 Northstar Energy Corporation was bought. In 1999 Devon took over a spin-off from Pennzoil .
In 2000, Devon Energy merged with the Santa Fe Snyder Corporation . In 2001, Anderson Exploration Ltd. and in 2002 acquired Mitchell Energy & Development . In 2003, Devon Energy merged with Ocean Energy Inc.
In March 2010, Devon Energy sold oil fields in Brazil, Mexico and Azerbaijan to the British oil company BP for USD 7 billion . As a medium-sized oil company, Devon did not have the financial capacity to use all of its oil fields.
In late 2009, construction began on the company's new headquarters in Oklahoma City. The result is a 54-story skyscraper , the Devon Energy Tower , which was completed in 2012 and is the tallest building in the city with a height of 259 meters.
