Pennzoil

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pennzoil is a brand name of Royal Dutch Shell , under which the company sells motor oils in the US market . Pennzoil was established as a brand name at the beginning of the 20th century, which was used by various motor oil producers. Through a variety of mergers and acquisitions, the Pennzoil Company was founded in 1925 as an amalgamation of these companies. The controlling majority of the Pennzoil Company held from the beginning South Penn Oil , a company that previously belonged to the Standard Oil Trust and gained its independence in the course of its split. In 1955 Pennzoil was completely taken over by South Penn.

In 1963 Zapata Petroleum , Stetco Petroleum and South Penn merged to form a new Pennzoil Company. Zapata was a company owned by George Bush and brothers John Hugh Liedtke and Bill Liedtke . Stetco also belonged to the two brothers. The combined company was headquartered in Houston . Pennzoil grew in the following years, among other things through the purchase of United Gas . In 1984 an agreement was also reached with Getty Oil , after which Getty would have been merged with Pennzoil. A few days later, however, it was announced that Texaco would take over Getty. In one of the largest civil lawsuits in the United States, Texaco was subsequently sentenced to a fine of more than $ 10 billion because the contract between Getty and Pennzoil was already final. In 1998 Pennzoil's motor oil division was spun off and soon merged with Quaker State Corporation to form Pennzoil-Quaker State Company . This in turn was taken over by Shell in 2002. The exploration and production business ("upstream" business), which remained under the name PennzEnergy Company after 1998 , was bought up by Devon Energy in 1999 .

Pennzoil's oval brand logo shows the Liberty Bell in red on a yellow background. The lettering "Pennzoil" runs diagonally from the bottom left to the top right.
