Devonia perrieri is a mussel species from the lentil mussel family(Montacutidae). It lives commensally on the sea cucumber Leptosynapta inhaerens (OV Müller, 1776).
features
The flat, equally-hinged, constantly gaping housing is up to five millimeters long. It is obliquely rounded and rectangular in outline. The length / height ratio is around 1.4. The case is unequal, the vortices are well behind the center line, about a third of the length of the case from the rear end. It is clearly elongated towards the upper front end. The anterior dorsal margin is almost straight, it only slopes gently towards the anterior end. The front edge appears slightly truncated by a (rounded) kink from the dorsal edge to the front edge. The transition from the front edge to the ventral edge is further rounded. The posterior dorsal margin is convexly curved and slopes more sharply towards the posterior end. The rear edge is only flatly rounded. The transition from the rear edge to the ventral edge is well rounded. The ventral margin is curved in a flat convex manner.
The very narrow, short ligament lies internally in a shallow, rearward-facing depression behind the vertebrae. The lock is toothless. Occasionally there is a very small hump in front of the ligament pit. The surface line is complete. The two sphincters are essentially the same size. The anterior sphincter is elongated-elliptical, the posterior sphincter rather rounded. The jacket can enclose the housing in the edge areas, the siphon and jacket are covered on the outside with short papillae. Adult animals can no longer completely withdraw the soft body into the housing.
The whitish, often brownish tinted skin is thin and transparent. The surface is almost smooth with fine lines parallel to the edge and coarser lines that are caused by interruptions in growth. Also, there are often very fine radial lines. The inside edge of the case is smooth. The periostracum is a thin, transparent coating. Often the eddies have rust-colored deposits.
Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life
The distribution area of Devonia perrieri extends from the British Isles to the Iberian Peninsula . It is also found on the American east coast near Cape Cod .
The animals live commensally with Leptosynapta inhaerens (OF Müller, 1776) in gravelly sand. They hold on to the body of the sea cucumber with the disc-shaped foot, mainly in the rear part of the body, more rarely on the tentacles.
Taxonomy
The species name was proposed by AE Mallard in 1904 as Synapticola perrieri . Synapticola Malard, 1904 , was preoccupied by Synapticola Voight, 1892. Therefore, in 1930 Ronald Winckworth suggested Devonia as a substitute name. The genus and species are accepted as valid taxa by the MolluscaBase.
