Dhagpo Kagyu Mandala

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dhagpo Kagyü Mandala is an amalgamation of numerous Buddhist centers of the Karma Kagyü tradition in Europe, based on Dhagpo Kagyü Ling, the European headquarters of the Gyalwa Karmapa . The centers are under the spiritual direction of the Karmapa candidate Trinle Thaye Dorje and his European representative Jigme Rinpoche.

History and background

In 1975 the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, accompanied by Gendün Rinpoche and Jigme Rinpoche, came to Europe and visited the Dordogne, southern France, where he received a piece of land from Georges Benson in 1974. Gendün Rinpoche was installed as the spiritual leader and Jigme Rinpoche as the European representative of the Gyalwa Karmapa. From then on, they took care of the establishment of the Dhagpo Kagyü Ling center, which later became the headquarters of the Karma Kagyü Lineage in Europe. In 1988 the Karma Dharma Chakra monastic community belonging to Dhagpo Kagyü Ling was recognized as a religious society by ministerial ordinance. This was apparently the first time that a non-Christian organization had received such recognition in France. The Dhagpo Kagyu Mandala is a member of the European Buddhist Union, maintains many centers and associations in Germany and is part of a network of around 900 Karma Kagyu centers in 62 countries, which are the Karmapa candidates in the conflict over the successor of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Recognize Trinle Thaye Dorje as head of the Karma Kagyu tradition.
