The city is part of the Anantapur district . Dharmawaram has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 23 wards (constituencies).

The city's population is 121,874 according to the 2011 census. Dharmawaram has a gender ratio of 958 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The literacy rate was 71.1% in 2011. Almost 86% of the population are Hindus , around 14% are Muslims and less than 1% belong to another or no religion. 10.5% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

The city is known for its hand-woven saris . The city is also known for cotton, silk weaving and leather dolls. Hence this city is called the silk city of Andhra Pradesh
