The Diablo Dam ( English Diablo Dam ) is a dam on the Skagit River in Washington State . It was inaugurated in 1930. With its height of 119 meters, it was the highest dam on earth at that time . The name comes from Spanish, means "devil" and is said to come from a Chinook word at the same time .

history

The construction type of the dam is an arched weight wall made of concrete. It is 360 meters long and about 41 meters thick at the base. The dam was built from 1927 to 1929 by the Constant Angle Arch Dam Company on behalf of the City of Seattle . It was built to generate electricity from a hydroelectric power station to power Seattle. The power plant has an output of 169.3 MW. The dam was inaugurated on August 27, 1930.

In addition, two more dams were built on the Skagit, the Ross Dam, which was built from 1937 to 1953 and whose reservoir extends into Canada, and the new Gorge High Dam (completed in 1961) to replace an old one from 1924. Together they make up the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project, which today provides 25% of Seattle's electricity. James Delmage Ross (1872–1939), head of the Seattle City Light electricity company , was responsible for the project. In his honor, the Ross Dam, originally christened Ruby Dam, was renamed.

When it was completed in 1930, the Diablo Dam towered over the world's highest Schräh Dam in Switzerland at 111.6 meters , but was replaced by the 127 m high Owyhee Dam in Oregon in 1932 and the 136 m high Chambon Dam in 1934 in France and in 1935 by the 221 m high Hoover Dam .

Since June 30, 1989, the Diablo Dam has been listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places . The dam has Art Deco architectural elements. The lanterns are also noteworthy.
