The diagonal barrier is a structural measure for inner-city access roads and serves to convert straight intersecting residential roads into loop roads . In this way, unwanted through traffic can be prevented and traffic calming can be achieved. For non-motorized modes of transport such as pedestrian and bicycle traffic ( NMIV ), however, the barriers are permeable so that you do not have to take detours.

The lanes are to be delimited by edging such as high curbs . Furthermore, crossing the barrier can be prevented by vertical elements such as bollards , trees or posts. The latter have the advantage that rescue service vehicles or supply vehicles can drive over the barrier if necessary.
