from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

dial ( English for dial is)-based voice control watch .

properties

It was presented for the first time at the Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona , together with the cooperation partner, Deutsche Telekom . The developer of dial is the American start-up iam +, which was founded by will.i.am , the singer of the Black Eyed Peas , and is headed by the entrepreneur Chandra Rathakrishnan .

Technical specifications

The specialty of the dial is the possibility to use the device without a connection to a smartphone . Internet and telephony functions are made possible by a built-in nano SIM slot. Coupling with a smartphone is not possible.

The bracelet can be controlled via a voice function as well as via a 1.6-inch touchscreen . iam + does not rely on Android Wear or Tizen for dial , but on a proprietary operating system - in this case AneedA . The operating system is also the name giver for the integrated language system. The company developed the voice control in cooperation with the voice software manufacturer Nuance and describes it as the first voice operating system in the world.

The dial is the streaming networked Service of iam +, can be which claims to have 20 million songs streamed free. These can also be saved on the watch's internal memory.

criticism

Even though the dial is offered in two different sizes, there are criticisms of the dimensions of the smartwatch: The bracelet would not fit on some wrists. The dial can only be bought and operated with a SIM card from the respective cooperation partner. This fact meets with criticism.

"What bothers me much more is the fact that I should be forced to buy another SIM card and, accordingly, another contract."

- Stefan Schomberg

The design of the dial is also rated differently by portals on the Internet. John McCann writes:

“The biggest surprise about will.i.am's new smartwatch? It actually looks good. "

- John McCann

Der Spiegel reports that there were associations with an ankle cuff at the presentation in Barcelona and asks:

"Bracelet or ankle cuff?"

- Matthias Kremp

History of iam +

The technology journalist James Cook, for example, does not believe in the success of the dial. He ties this to the company history of iam + and the business failures of Rathakrishnan.

“The company he created and self-funded, i.am +, has only ever launched one product, called the foto.sosho camera case. It was, by all accounts, a complete disaster. [...] The man who cofounded i.am + with will.i.am, Chandrasekar Rathakrishnan, is an infamous businessman with a controversial history filled with court cases and failed products. "

- James Cook
