Dials

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dialen (or Sg. Diela ; Pl. Dialas , Dielas , dieuldas ) are a group of demonesses . The name is probably derived from the Romance word Dealis or Dialis , which means god-like beings.

They come from the Rhaeto-Romanic folk tradition of Graubünden and are represented there as goat's feet. Despite their demon existence, they are benign and are said to inhabit caves that are particularly beautifully decorated. They are usually described as dressed in white or sometimes red clothes. Their good nature is expressed in the way that they should help with field work and entertain people with silver dishes. They dry their laundry in the sun , in special places in the mountains, the laundry freaks. They are also supposed to show stray people the right way and give coal, which turns into gold.
