Diamond chair

The Diamond chair is a piece of seating furniture made of filigree metal mesh. The armchair was created by the Italian-American furniture designer Harry Bertoia in Pennsylvania in 1950 . It was the most successful draft that he created as a designer for the Hans Knoll company .

In addition to the Diamond Chair (armchair), Bertoia also designed an Asymmetric Chaise (Asymmetric Lounger ), Barstool (bar stool), Child's Diamond Chair (children's armchair ), High Back Chair and Ottoman ( high-back chair with stool), Side chair ( Chair), Small Diamond Chair and the matching Slatted Wooden Bench .

history

The Diamond Chair became a sales success in the following years and is still manufactured by Knoll today. The armchair and the manufacturing process were internationally patented by Knoll in 1952.

The Diamond Chair consists of a welded metal basket that is polished, matt chrome-plated or with a Rilsan coating in different colors. The various cover fabrics are stretched over the wire basket and, like the actual seat cushion, secured to the metal mesh with small hooks. Bertoia himself said of his Diamond Chairs: “They are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them. "

The license income from his armchair allowed Bertoia to concentrate only on his sculptural work and his sound sculptures. The number of items sold worldwide is not known in detail. The Diamond Chair has been included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art , the Metropolitan Museum of Art , the Rhode Island School of Design Museum and the Vitra Design Museum , among others .
