history

The company's history began in 1958 with the machining of ultra-hard materials: bearing jewels for industry, barrel needles for turntables and other components. The quartz crisis in the 1970s, as well as the introduction of the compact disc (CD) player and the associated decline in demand for barrel needles, required diversification of activities. The experience gained in the machining of high-precision components enabled Diamond to gain a foothold in fiber optic technology in 1979 at the request of the Swiss Post, Telephone and Telegraph Companies (PPT). The first series of high-precision fiber optic connectors was manufactured as early as 1980 . The success with polycrystalline diamond tools and components formed the basis on which Diamond's know-how and production experience in the field of precision mechanics was systematically expanded.

1992, has developed and constructed a small team of engineers to fiber optic connectors E-2000®, which at the existing DIN -based connector, however, also has an integral cover, a push-pull disposal mechanism and a mechanical coding, and made of high quality plastic made is.

In 1993 Diamond SA achieved sales of around 40 million francs. In 2001, the best year, the company had 1550 employees worldwide, 960 of whom worked in Switzerland and had a turnover of 145 million Swiss francs. By 2004 sales had dropped to 45 million Swiss francs.

Active core-core alignment (ACA)

With the aim of reducing insertion loss by reducing the eccentricity of the fiber core to a minimum, Diamond developed the patented two-component ferrule with a titanium insert and the core-core centering technology (Active Core Alignment, ACA). In this process, the end face of the ferrule is plastically deformed after the positioned fiber has been polymerized in order to align the fiber core with the mechanical axis of the ferrule. The invention dates back to the 1980s when the company used a two-component ferrule and micromanipulator to center the fiber core in the connector.

Products

The fiber optic sector and its applications are very diverse. Diamond develops its own and customer-specific connectors, assembles single and multi-channel fiber optic connectors and equips them with various fiber and ferrule technologies. The areas of application for the connector are enormous, e.g. B. They are used in telecommunications , in industry , in space, in the military or in medicine . Diamond holds over 70 patents and word marks, including the E-2000®, F-3000® and AVIM®.
