Dian (Hellespont)

Dian (Latin Dian , Russian Дий , Dij ) was a legendary leader of Hellespont in the 9th century. He was mentioned in Old Norse sagas .

Hellespont was an area somewhere southeast of the Baltic Sea .

Around 835 Dian was defeated and killed by the Viking leader Ragnar Lodbrok . He appointed his son Hvitserk as his successor.

Dian had two sons, Daxo and Dian. Daxo eventually defeated Hvitserk and became Prince of Hellespont.

  1. Saxo Grammaticus mentioned a prince Handvan in the castle "Duna", which could have been on the river Düna , cf. Gesta Danorum , IX, 1. Hellespont was probably not the same as the "Hellespont" on the Dardanelles, and neither was it with Gardarike , the area along the Dnepr to the Black Sea
