The songwriting team Rapée and Pollack had successfully written the song Charmaine together in 1926 ; Diane is very similar in design, a sentimental waltz with an ascending melody , simple harmonies, and a large span. The music of the song, written in F major in the form AA'AA ' , is in the style of the operetta of the 19th century ( song form ).
First recordings and later cover versions
The musicians who covered the song from 1927 included Nat Shilkret (Victor), Sam Lanin , in England Fred Elizalde , The Troubadours (alias Hugo Frey's Orchestra) and in Paris Lud Gluskin . In Germany, Efim Schachmeister recorded the title with his jazz symphonies.
Mantovani's orchestra had a hit in the United States with the song in 1955; In later years u. a. also Ernst Mosch (Memory, 1986), Paul Bley / Paul Motian ( Notes , 1988), Conte Candoli , Ray Charles , Eddie Costa , Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders, Miles Davis ( Steamin 'with the Miles Davis Quintet ), Tommy Dorsey , Earl Hines and Jack Teagarden wrote the song.
