Diane Dodds (born August 16, 1958 in Banbridge ) is a British politician of the Democratic Unionist Party .

Life

Dodds attended Banbridge Academy and studied history and English to be a teacher at Queen's University Belfast . Before going into politics, she taught at Laurelhill High School for seven years.

Political career

From November 26, 2003 to March 7, 2007 she was a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly, replacing Joe Hendron . In 2007 she lost her seat in the Northern Ireland Assembly to Jennifer McCann of Sinn Féin . From 2009 Dodds was a member of the European Parliament . As an EU parliamentarian, Dodds was a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development , the Delegation for relations with Israel and the Fisheries Committee.

When the United Kingdom left the EU at the end of January 2019, Dodds lost her seat in the European Parliament. She moved back to the Northern Ireland Assembly on January 9, 2020, where she took over the mandate from Carla Lockhart , who was elected to the UK House of Commons in December 2019 . On January 11, 2020, she also took over the office of Northern Ireland Minister for Economic Affairs .

Dodds is a member of Belfast City Council . She is married to the politician and lawyer Nigel Dodds .
