Dianema is a genus from the family of callichthyidae (Callichthyidae).
The fish that occur in tropical South America differ from other members of the Callichthyidae family in that they have a slightly different physique. Because of their external appearance, the spindle-shaped, elongated fish with barbels pointing forward are often referred to as torpedo catfish or torpedo callous catfish . In contrast to other callous catfish, they prefer to swim freely in middle water layers.
The two species belonging to the genus Dianema are peace-loving schooling fish that are also suitable for keeping in aquariums . As intestinal breathers , they must have the opportunity to take in atmospheric air, which is why free access to the water surface is necessary.
