General structure of ethers
R 1 and R 2 are aryl groups . The oxygen atom of the ether is marked in blue .

In chemistry, diaryl ethers are organic compounds that have an ether group as a functional group - an oxygen atom that is substituted by two aryl groups ( aromatic radicals ) (R 1 -O-R 2 ). In the simplest case, the aryl groups R 1 and R 2 are phenyl groups ( diphenyl ether ).

Diaryl ethers should not be confused with dialkyl ethers or, according to IUPAC, also referred to as alkoxyalkanes .
