Dhiban (also Diban ; Arabic ذيبان, DMG Ḏībān ) is a city in Jordan . It is located in the area of biblical Moab , about five kilometers north of the Arnon River and about 20 kilometers east of the Dead Sea . Dhiban is known as the place where the Mesha stele was found .
The city is already mentioned in the Old Testament , under the names Dibon ( 4 Mos 21.30 EU ) and Dibon-gad ( 4 Mos 3.45 EU ). It is said to have been built by Gad and Dibon ( Isa 15,9 EU ). According to the Mesha stele, Dhiban was in the 9th century BC. Probably capital of the kingdom of Moab .
