Richard "Dick" Bell (* in Greenock or Aberdeen ) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Bell was active in Scotland for Dawdon Juniors and Port Glasgow Athletic before moving to England for Sunderland AFC in June 1935 . There it took almost two years before he came on April 24, 1937 in an away game against Leeds United to his competitive debut in the Football League First Division . Actually a half-forward, he was called up in the 3-0 defeat in the striker row alongside Len Duns , Raich Carter , Bobby Gurney and Patsy Gallacher as left winger. This was also his only use for Sunderland, during the break of the season he moved to the second division West Ham United . There, too, he had to wait almost two years for his debut, on April 15, 1939 he contributed a goal to the 2-1 home win against West Bromwich Albion .

Even at West Ham it was not enough for any further use, with the approach of the Second World War , Bell, like numerous other West Ham players, joined the Essex Regiment of the Territorial Army in April 1939 and later served in the Royal Artillery . In the war-related football replacement competitions, Bell completed a game each for Southend United and Clapton Orient in the 1940/41 season .
