William Holden (* 1860 in Darwen ; † unknown) was an English football goalkeeper .

Career

Holden was loaned by the Football League competing Blackburn Rovers from nearby Darwen FC in December 1888 after the Rovers found themselves in a goalkeeping crisis. Regular goalkeeper Herbie Arthur was out with a knee injury for a long time and could only be replaced in the next game by the actual defender Fergie Suter . Holden came immediately on December 29 in the 0-1 defeat against local rivals and eventual champions Preston North End to use, but then returned to Darwen FC; At Blackburn, 17-year-old Billy McOwen took over the goalkeeping position for the rest of the season . When Darwen was also accepted into the Football League in 1891, Holden was no longer part of the squad.
