Leyton Orient (officially: Leyton Orient Football Club ) - also known as The O’s - is an English football club from east London. The home games are played at Matchroom Stadium on Brisbane Road in Leyton . The club has been competing in the fourth-class EFL League Two since the 2019/20 season .
history
The association was founded in 1881 by students at Homerton Theological College . After some employees of the shipping company Orient Shipping Line joined the association in 1888 , it was renamed Orient Football Club . In 1898 the name was changed again to Clapton Orient , which was valid until 1946. Since then, the club has been called Leyton Orient , with an interruption from 1966 to 1987, when Leyton was also deleted from the club name.
After playing in the lower class for the first twenty years, he was accepted into the Football League in 1905 , where the O’s have since played mainly in the lower professional leagues . Only in 1962/63 were they represented for one year in the First Division , the top English division at the time.
Leyton Orient then only caused a stir in 1978 when they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup and on the way there were the first division clubs Norwich City (1-0 away in the replay), Chelsea FC (2-1 away in the replay) and Middlesbrough FC (2: 1 at home in the replay) could turn off. In the semifinals on April 8, 1978, on neutral ground at Stamford Bridge , however, there was a clear 3-0 win against Arsenal . The highest attendance to date did not come from this cup series, but was achieved on January 25, 1964 in the FA Cup game against West Ham United , when 34,345 visitors came to Brisbane Road . On February 20, 2011, Leyton Orient again reached a surprising 1-1 draw against Arsenal in the FA Cup, forcing the favorites to play a replay.
The current club symbol has been used since 1976, in which two wyverns are depicted, who are leaning on a soccer ball and are supposed to symbolize the association's connection to the city of London and the sea.
After eleven years in the lowest English professional league, Leyton Orient achieved promotion to Football League One in 2006 as third in the table .
On January 21, 2009, long-time coach Martin Ling was dismissed after Leyton Orient with only 22 points in 25 games in dire relegation problems.
On April 22, 2017, a 3-0 defeat at Crewe Alexandra sealed relegation to the National League and thus, after 112 professional years, the move to the amateur area.
