Carl Neil Fletcher (born April 7, 1980 in Surrey Heath , England ) is a former Welsh football player . The defensive midfielder made 36 full caps for the Welsh national team between 2004 and 2009 . In 2019 he took over the coaching position at Leyton Orient .

Career

The Welshman's career began in 1997 with the English club AFC Bournemouth . In 2004 Fletcher moved to West Ham United , from where he was loaned out to Watford FC in 2005 . That same year he returned to West Ham United. A year later, Fletcher was signed by Crystal Palace . Since mid-February 2009 he played for Plymouth Argyle , initially only on loan and from summer 2009 permanently committed. In September 2011 he took over the sporting management there on an interim basis after the departure of coach Peter Reid . On November 1, 2011, he was introduced as the new coach. After the fourth division was in danger of relegation during the 2012/13 season, Fletcher was released on January 1, 2013 in Plymouth . After a last stint at Barnet FC , he became youth coach at Bournemouth AFC in 2014.

In October 2019 he was introduced as the new head coach at fourth division promoted Leyton Orient , who has been looked after by Ross Embleton on an interim basis since the sudden death of promotion coach Justin Edinburgh during the summer break . Just 29 days later, Fletcher was relieved of his duties again, the team had remained without a win in the five games under his leadership and had lost in the last game against eight division club Maldon & Tiptree United in the FA Cup .
