Dick Hillenius
Dick Hillenius (born May 29, 1927 in Amsterdam ; † May 4, 1987 ibid), also known as Dirk Hillenius, was a Dutch poet, essayist and herpetologist . His main research interests were chameleons .
Live and act
Hillenius was the brother of the painter and graphic artist Jaap Hillenius (1934–1999). As a child he was interested in biology and music. He attended the University of Amsterdam and in 1951 became director of the public exhibitions at the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA). In 1954 he became a curator at the herpetological department. During this time his research began for his doctoral thesis on the differentiation within the chameleon species Chamaeleo with which he in 1959 under the leadership of Hendrik Engel (1898-1981) for Ph.D. received his doctorate.
Although Hillenius' preferred field of interest was chameleons, he also published essays and poems, beginning in 1961 with the work Tegen het vegetarisme . Other titles were Het romantische mechaniek (1969) and Een klein apparaat tegen rechtslijnigheid (1975). Hillenius impressed with a rousing enthusiasm that made his work popular with a broad Dutch audience. He often wrote titles that featured reptiles and amphibians, especially chameleons, toads, and frogs. He was also joking with Darwin's theory . Hillenius was a frequent and popular guest on Dutch television. He also worked on the documentary " Fressen und sein sein" by Bert Haanstra .
