The big oak (also called Dick Ääch in dialect ) is a natural monument in Kleinottweiler , a district of Bexbach in the Saarpfalz district, Saarland. As a symbol of Kleinottweiler, the thick oak was included in the newly created coat of arms of the then Kleinottweiler community in 1968.

Location and appearance

The thick oak stands in the northeast of Kleinottweiler on the edge of the built-up area. The tree is a sessile oak that died in 2011 and was stripped of its crown in 2003. Today the remains of the tree are therefore only 11 meters high. The trunk circumference is one meter above the ground, 3.80 meters. The trunk is free of knots up to a height of 4.50 meters. Two bulges show that branches have been removed there.

history

Coat of arms of Kleinottweiler with oak

The oak was first mentioned in 1520 in a description of the ban, then in 1564 by Tilemann Stella , who characterized the oak with the following words: " This malbaum is called Steinacker aich, is big ... ". At that time, the tree marked the ban border between Kleinottweiler and Erbach and at the same time the border of the Hattweiler rule .

The oak was measured more precisely in 1943 and at that time had a height of 17 meters and a crown width of 20 meters.

In 2002, an expert found the “almost 600 year old” tree to have been “completely eroded” and infested with oak fire sponge , a tree fungus . To preserve the tree, it was recommended that the particularly infested upper part be shortened. On January 21, 2003, the oak was cut by almost half of its trunk. Further measures were taken to ensure the survival of the tree. A tin roof was placed on the remaining trunk to protect the trunk from further weather damage. In 2008 a bird of prey nestled .

In 2010 the tree was examined again and a positive life expectancy was forecast. In 2011 he was no longer wearing leaves. "He was literally cared for to death," said the mayor. Today only the stump remains, which should be preserved as a natural monument.
