The mosquito reaches a body length of about 13 millimeters. Their antennae are colored clay yellow, with the limbs of the flagellum sometimes also being curled brown. The whorl hairs are twice as long as the limbs of the scourge. The two similar species of the genus with black-brown colored antennae flagella, Dicranoptycha fuscescens and Dicranoptycha cinerascens, differ in that the first two antennae segments are red-yellow in the former and bluish-gray and brown-black in the latter.
Way of life and distribution
The animals are found in Central and Southern Europe and colonize the herbaceous and shrub layers in forests. The larvae live in the litter of mixed and deciduous forests.
