The family of Mr. Westphal in the winter garden is a room picture created in 1836 by Johann Philipp Eduard Gaertner .

Image description and details

The picture shows a winter garden belonging to the Kommerzienrat Christian Carl Westphal (1783–1860), a major wool merchant in Prussia . The building, flooded with light, served the Westphal family as a day room. Christian Carl Westphal was a passionate horticulturist.

Eduard Gaertner was a vedute painter of the 19th century; this is one of the few interior scenes known to have been painted by him. Christian Carl Westphal was the landlord of Eduard Gaertner at Alexanderstrasse 22 in Berlin for four years.
