The foreigner is a work of art by Thomas Schütte and was part of the DOCUMENTA IX outdoor exhibition in Kassel in 1992 . Since then it has been on the still preserved portico of the Red Palace . It consists of a group of people in folkloric clothing with various improvised luggage such as shopping bags, vessels and suitcases. The people seem at a loss and are of different ethnic origins. The ensemble originally consisted of twelve parts for the Documenta and was made of glazed ceramic . After the end of the Documenta, the work of art was bought by the Leffers Group , which owned the building with the portico at the time and whose one branch still uses it today, for DM 210,000  and given it to the city of Kassel. The work of art originally consisted of nine figures, three of which remained with luggage in Kassel after the Documenta ended. The other figures are in Lübeck today in the music and congress hall . In April 2014, the work of art was temporarily dismantled as part of the renovation of the portico and also renovated. In June 2015 it was rebuilt at the old location.
