content

The Glass Books of Dream Eaters is a fantasy novel set in a fantasy world reminiscent of Victorian England . The three heroes of the book, the plantation owner Miss Temple, the hit man "Cardinal" Chang and the personal physician of the Mecklenburg prince, Doctor Svenson, come in contact with the secret society of dream eaters, which has developed a process with which one can remember and Can transfer emotions from people to blue glass books. While Miss Temple follows her lost love Roger Bascombe to the wedding celebration of the Mecklenburg prince, in which the "dream eaters" have secretly sneaked in to present their macabre "procedure", "Cardinal" Chang receives the order to find Miss Temple and to do so kill. Dr. Svenson, who found out that his prince was kidnapped, is involved in the case through an intrigue of the German major Blach, who is also a member of the "Traumfresser". All three heroes team up to take down all the bad guys (the Contessa di Lacquer-Sforza, the Comte d´Orkancz and Francis Xonck).

Success and reviews

In the United States , the book was well received by critics, but only achieved disappointing sales. Of the first hardcover edition, only 22,000 of the 120,000 printed copies could be sold, resulting in a loss of over US $ 850,000 for the publisher.

The German publisher Blanvalet decided, based on the original publication in the USA, to print each chapter as a separate little "dime novel" of a good 100 pages and to collect these novels in a slipcase. Despite or because of this unusual presentation, the success in Germany has remained low. The book has not achieved a high Amazon sales rank, nor has it made it into bestseller lists.

Reviews:

“I read Gordon Dahlquist's novel in the English edition. The ten beautifully equipped, handy volumes made for a wonderful reading pleasure, because I always have them with me and so I could immerse myself in the spectacular world of Miss Temple, Cardinal Chang and Doctor Svenson at any time. And her adventures soon dominated my days. Because Gordon Dahlquist succeeds like no other in breathing life into his unforgettable heroes, and he depicts their fantastic adventures with an intensity that no one can escape. The glass books of the dream eaters refuse to accept any drawer I know. I love this novel. ” Audrey Niffenegger, author of the bestseller The Time Traveler's Wife .
