The grasshopper (original title: Les Faucheurs de marguerites) is a Canadian-French-German television series. It ran in four seasons from 1974 to 1982 on ARD.

Die Grashüpfer is an elaborate international television production about the time of the aviation pioneers, which spans almost four decades. The series first aired on French television on May 27, 1974.

Season 1: Aviation pioneers

It tells the story of the manufacturer's son Edouard Dabert and his friend Jules Joly, who travel to Germany on behalf of the Lumiere brothers and film Otto Lilienthal's flight attempts there . Your fascination for aviation begins. With more and more daring flight attempts, the two conquer the sky. Since the Wright brothers are now designing new aircraft and setting records in America , the French and Americans compete, which is decided when Louis Blériot succeeds in crossing the English Channel for the first time.

This season was directed by Marcel Camus , whose film Orfeu Negro won an Oscar .

Season 2: Knights of the Skies

Dabert is drafted into the First World War . He gets to know the German flying ace Hans Meister. Although both fight on opposing sides, they form friendship that continues even after the war. This season, Dabert's wife is killed on a scenic flight and his son turns away from him. Dabert wants to give up aviation and becomes a mechanic. Finally, aviator Etienne Leroux persuades him to take the first trans-Europe flight.

Season 3: Conquerors of the Sky

In the 1920s, the former flying aces of the First World War are no longer needed. They stay afloat with air shows and courier flights.

Season 4: Conquerors of the Continents

  • Nine episodes of 50 minutes each

After Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic crossing, Dabert and Meister are now organizing adventurous long-haul flights.

In 2001 the series was released in the French original on DVD. On March 6, 2020, the first season of Fernsehjuwelen GmbH was released on DVD ( Region 2 ) in German and French. It has a playing time of 366 minutes.
