The great shoes of Luther
The Great Shoes of Luther is the name of a memorial in honor of the reformer Martin Luther that was opened in Worms on April 18, 2017 . In addition to the Luther monument , it forms another memorial to the reformer in the city.
description
The memorial, designed by Constanze and Norbert Illig, which, in addition to an inscription plaque and an inscribed base, consists of oversized bronze “shoes” , is located in the garden of the Heylshof . The location was chosen because it is assumed that this is exactly where the reformer Martin Luther stood before Emperor Charles V and refused to revoke his theses , whereupon the Worms Edict was imposed on him, which prohibited him from further disseminating his theses.
opening
The memorial was opened in the so-called Luther year , on the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. In addition to Minister of State Volker Wissing , other representatives from politics, the church and society were also present on this occasion .
The number of participants was limited because, for fire safety reasons, not much more than 100 people were allowed to be on the site at the same time. So many people had to wait in front of the gates to be admitted. The mayor of Worms, Hans-Joachim Kosubek, also welcomed Marie-Elisabeth Klee , a granddaughter of Cornelius Wilhelm von Heyl , who was the owner and founder of the Heylshof.
Emergence
The memorial was financed by the Rotary Club of Worms , which then gave it to the city as a gift. The older plaque designed by the sculptor Gustav Nonnenmacher is located in the middle of the newly designed memorial site.
