The coast (Bremen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The coast was called the former entertainment district at the Bremen harbor in Bremen-Walle .

location

The coast began at the exit of the free port or Überseestadt on Nordstrasse . Even today there are restaurants that are reminiscent of the old coastal times. A car dash has established itself in the former free port in the area of the Holzhafen .

history

The heyday of the coast was in the 1950s and 1960s. The ports were largely destroyed during the war and were quickly rebuilt. With the increasing shipping traffic at the time, more and more seafarers came to the Bremen ports. The first container arrived in Bremen in 1966 , and cashless payment of wages became popular in the 1970s . The main source of income for the clubs and bars on the coast, the seafarers, was lost. The scene also got smaller.

Actors and Locals

The names of the clubs on the coast included Bamboo Bar , Crocodile and Golden City . Many seafarers came to the around 35 bars and dance halls, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. Crews of American warships also celebrated on the coast .

Hardly any clubs of that time have survived to this day, with the bamboo bar , today Happy Night , Elefant and Krokodil , three of the clubs from that time still exist on Nordstrasse. Since the development of the Überseehafen to the Überseestadt district, the “Golden City” project has existed since 2013, in which cultural workers create a maritime-themed cultural project in memory of the high times of the coast in the summer months .

The photographer Carla Bockholt was active on the coast from around 1948 until the end of the 1960s : she moved from bar to bar and took souvenir photos for the guests.
