The legend of the Christmas tree

The legend of the Christmas tree is a poem by Marx Möller , and it is sometimes ascribed to Friedrich Wilhelm Güll . The text with the first lines In the Sermon on the Mount, as can be read in Matthew, / trees were also mentioned and belonged to the most popular Christmas texts at the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century .

The poem makes no reference to the birth of Christ . Based on Matthew 7 : 16-19  EU , the poet tells a rather self-invented " legend " - actually it is more of a fable - which interprets the lights on the Christmas tree as the actual fruits of the fir tree , more valuable than any natural fruit.

The legend of the Christmas tree was also read early on for the record, for example by Hans Mühlhofer , and set to music, among others. a. by Ferdinand Hummel .
