action

1. Act - In the Weiberdorf

Since years ago all men went to war and no one came back, only women live in this village. All work and projects are discussed and carried out jointly by the women. That is why the plan is now being made by everyone to lie in wait to catch men. Every captured man should be dragged into the village and declared common property.

The pretty young Eva catches the young craftsman Friedel and falls in love with him. In order not to have to share it with the other women, Friedel disguises himself as a woman. In the meantime a commissioner from the prince has come to the village and brings the message that on the prince's orders men are to be resettled in the village again.

However, in order to be able to determine the right men for the village, the prince asked for three model wives . The inspector lets all women stand and chooses the pretty Anne-Marie, the lovely Eva and the journeyman Friedel.

Act 2 - In the prince's hunting lodge

In order to avoid a scandal in the royal seat, the Hereditary Prince and his court - which consists only of men - were banished to the princely hunting lodge a long time ago. By chance the Hereditary Prince now learns that the commissioner and his companion are passing near the hunting lodge. He orders his valet Sebastian to pretend to be Prince Xaver Nicodemus XXIV and to order the commissioner into the hunting lodge.

At the same time as the commissioner, the old lady-in-waiting, Ziegenbein, arrives at the hunting lodge and is supposed to see that the Hereditary Prince and court are all right. In order to distract from the commissioner and the model women, the young Junker von Sprinz has to declare his love for the old lady-in-waiting and offer a marriage proposal.

During the inspection of the model women, the Hereditary Prince Anne-Marie recognizes the woman for whom he was banished. His joy to have found her again is so great that he immediately orders a big party to be held. When this festival begins, the real Prince Xaver Nicodemus XXIV unexpectedly arrives at the hunting lodge.

3rd act - in front of the prince's hunting lodge

The prince is furious about the arbitrariness of the hereditary prince and does not want to send any men to the women’s village. All three women charm the prince and their coquetry turns the prince around. And since he likes Friedel best of all three women, he courted her. Soothed by Friedel, the prince allows all women in the village to choose a man from the court of the Hereditary Prince.

Anne-Marie chooses the hereditary prince and the prince gives his blessing, because he is still hoping for a shepherd's hour with Friedel. He, however, puts him off to St. Never's Day and goes with Eva.
