The Settlers of Catan - The Dice Game (since 2014 Catan - The Dice Game ) is a dice game developed by Klaus Teuber , which was published in 2007 by Kosmos-Verlag . It is based on the globally successful game The Settlers of Catan and uses the mechanism of dice poker games (such as Kniffel ).

Style of play

The game contains 6 dice and a block with 60 boards. The game board is based on the field from The Settlers of Catan, but it only contains seven fields on which streets, cities, settlements and knights are already drawn. The dice are printed with the six raw materials clay, wood, wool, grain, ore and gold.

procedure

Surname raw materials Victory points
Street 1 × clay, 1 × wood 1
Knight 1 × ore, 1 × wool, 1 × grain 1-6
settlement 1 × clay, 1 × wood, 1 × wool, 1 × grain 3-11
city 3 × ore, 2 × grain 7-13

The active player throws the 6 dice up to three times, after each roll a decision can be made as to which dice to put aside and which to roll again. At the latest after his third roll, the result is fixed and the dice are evaluated. Depending on the raw materials, he can buy streets, knights, settlements or cities. You have to start at the specified starting street and always adjoin a street that has already been built, and the free field with the lowest value must be selected first. The exception here are the knights, who only have to be built in the specified order. The player marks the buildings he has bought on his game board and notes the points on them.
As soon as they have been acquired, the knights can be used as raw material jokers. Each knight is assigned a resource that can be used once in the game. The sixth knight serves as a universal joker. For every two gold you can exchange any other raw material. In both cases, one die has to be turned to the desired result, in the case of gold one of the gold dies while the second cannot be used any further. If it is not possible for a player to buy something, he must note down 2 minus points.
After each player has played 15 times, which can be seen from the fact that he has filled in all point fields, the game ends. All players add up their points, the player with the highest number of points wins.

Extensions

On the website for the world of Catan, the publisher offers two extensions that you can print out yourself.

In the dice game plus a target of 10 victory points is played, whereby streets and knights give no points, settlements 1 point and cities 2 points. The longest street (longest trade route) and the largest number of knights (greatest knight power) each give two additional points.

The extra dice game is based more on the original game. The players build together on a large board with the aim of being the first to receive 10 victory points. Otherwise the rules are similar to the dice game plus.

Reviews

The game is described by the critics as a moderately successful offshoot of the Catan series. A frequent point of criticism is the lack of tactical options and the high degree of randomness. The variants available online are often praised as a good change. Christoph Ledinger writes on spieletest.at, for example, that the game and its extensions "are well suited as a warm-up exercise or as a conclusion to a game of games, because they bring the big game into a simple, quick-play form." On Reich-der-Spiele.de, Carsten Pinnow criticizes the bitter aftertaste of a solitaire game and Györög Kurt from topolino writes the following: «The Settlers of Catan - The dice game is a nice and interesting dice game for the whole family - and certainly a" MUST " for every Catan fan. [...] The Settlers of Catan - The Dice Game plus [...] is much more interesting and exciting. »

The game has been translated into English and many other languages.
