The Star Beast (orig. The Star Beast ) is a 1954 published science fiction novel by American writer Robert A. Heinlein . The German first edition appeared in 1966 under the title Das Ultimatum von den Sternen . New German edition published in 1984 and 1992.

200 years ago John Thomas Stuart VII brought the extraterrestrial being Lummox to earth on his second space trip on the Himmelstürmer . Since then, Lummox has been kept as a pet by the Stuart family .

Lummox has now grown to the size of a dinosaur and its current owner is the young John Thomas Stuart XI. John always has to make sure that Lummox doesn't cause any problems. Lummox has a particular hunger for metals such as iron ; if he eats metal, this triggers a growth spurt .

One day he panics the neighborhood and even the city. John has to appear in court for property damage and keeping a dangerous animal. His girlfriend Betty Sorenson is by his side, but his mother definitely wants to get rid of Lummox. It's a big deal for the Department of Spatial Affairs as they need to find out if Lummox has any intelligence . Otherwise the court wants to sentence Lummox to death and execute him.

John doesn't want to let his beloved pet be killed, he doesn't even want to sell it to a zoo . Therefore he decides to flee with Lummox.

At the same time, the ministry is receiving messages from an alien race called the Hroshii demanding the return of their conspecifics.
