action

The operetta takes place in France - Fréjus and Paris - in 1799 and 1805.

France has been a republic since 1792. The privileges of the nobility were abolished and their property expropriated. The new government has decreed that all emigrated noblemen who return to their homeland and marry a civil woman within 24 hours will get their goods back. Count Lavalette also reached this customer in his American exile. Inspired by the hope of being able to live again carefree in his beloved France, he arrives in the port city of Fréjus. On the market square he made the acquaintance of the members of a traveling opera stage. He was particularly fond of the classy Teresa. When he protects her from an intrusive admirer, the two get closer. They soon realize that they are a good match, and when Lavalette proposes to Teresa, she happily agrees. She has less in mind the prospect of wealth; rather, she is attracted by the idea of being able to adorn her name with a title of nobility.

As soon as the two are married, a memorable event occurs in Lavalette's life: Napoléon Bonaparte returns from his Egyptian expedition and is celebrated as a true folk hero on his way to Paris. In Fréjus he meets Count Lavalette and asks him to come with him. Lavalette is so fascinated by the Corsican that he immediately follows his call without saying goodbye to his young wife.

Six years have now passed. Napoléon has been Emperor of France since 1804. The ambitious Teresa managed to climb the career ladder to prima donna at the Paris Opera. They all just call her "The Teresina". When Lavalette meets her in Paris, he doesn't recognize her, but she does him! Immediately he has the plan to conquer the beautiful singer and immediately flirts with her very violently. However, he soon realizes that he is not the only one targeting the Teresina. His rival is none other than the emperor himself. The singer flirts with her role. Although she feels that she still loves Lavalette, she wants to at least give him a little lesson because he left her so bang on case six years ago. When she has cracked his jealousy, she reveals herself to him. Lavalette regrets his disdainful behavior and begs her forgiveness. Napoléon also sees that he has a certain complicity in the fate of the young couple; after all, at the time he simply ordered the count to join him unconditionally. He ends his courtship for the beautiful Teresina. She and Lavalette have finally been able to live like a real married couple, which they have been for six years.
