The Rapture of Saint Cecilia is a painting by Raphael .

The altarpiece was designed for the Church of San Giovanni in Monte in Bologna. The client was the Bolognese noblewoman Elena Buglioli dall'Olio.

The picture shows in the manner of a sacra conversazione St. Cäcilia with a portative in the company of St. Paul with the sword, Johannes Evangelista with the eagle as an attribute , Augustine dressed as a bishop and with the crosier and Mary Magdalene with the ointment vessel.

The clouds of heaven open up above the group and reveal a choir of singing angels. Musical instruments are scattered in front of the gathering of the saints, including flutes, cymbals, tambourines, a triangle and a large string instrument.

history

Napoleon Bonaparte deported the painting to Paris in 1798. In 1815 it returned to Italy. Today it is kept in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna , inv. 577.
