The stupid Augustine is a 1972 classic children's book by Otfried Preußler (text) and Herbert Lentz (illustration) about emancipation and self-realization. It was first published by Thienemann-Verlag .

content

The stupid Augustine, wife of the stupid August who performs in the circus and mother of Guggo, Gugga and Guggilein, dreams of being able to perform as a clown in the circus one day. Instead, she has to run the busy household. Her proposal to share both the job and the work in the household and with the children is met with sheer incomprehension and mockery by the husband. When stupid August suffers from a toothache and misses his appearance, Augustine takes her chance, steps in and promptly masters this task with flying colors. From then on, father and mother share housework and circus work, because stupid August immediately realizes that he has extremely underestimated his wife.

This picture book teaches children that women have just as many skills as men and that tradition does not mean that they should be at the stove, but that they are also allowed to work. In the year it was published, this topic was even more topical than it is today, when emancipation has advanced further and families with traditional roles are no longer without alternatives. The pedagogical intention therefore seems a bit out of date. Also, the story makes girls and boys think about their abilities.

The author Marion Thuswald in her book recommendations for elementary school published by the Austrian information platform on political education writes in a similar way in the brochure Gender-sensitive political children's books : The book is already 35 years old. Even if a lot has changed since then, one thing has remained the same: housework and childcare are still predominantly women’s work, even if more and more women are employed. That's why this book about housework is still up to date ... In a more up-to-date book, the aspects that make a role change attractive for men too would be emphasized: to see how the children grow up.
