The lazy spinner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The lazy spinner is a swank ( ATU 1405). It is in the children's and house tales of the Brothers Grimm at number 128 (KHM 128).

content

A lazy woman excuses herself that she cannot reel because she has no reel . Her husband goes chopping reel wood. She hides and shouts three times "whoever knocks down reel wood, dies, whoever reels, spoils!" until he gives up. They reel the thread by tossing the ball back and forth between the attic and downstairs. The wife is supposed to cook it. She puts a cooked thread in the pot and lets the man watch. So he thinks he did it wrong and leaves her alone in the future.

origin

Grimm's note notes from Zwehrn (by Dorothea Viehmann ) and, in addition to KHM 14, The Three Spinners , lists references for comparison: Pentameron 4.4; Old German forests 3, 160-163 and Hagen's complete adventure 2, 141 ; Paulis Schimpf and Ernst . Etymologically, they associate the spindle tree with a divining tree that is significant for luck or misfortune.

According to Hans-Jörg Uther, the motive of chasing fear through a hidden acclamation is identical to that of the teased prayer, who z. B. seeks higher advice from a tree, see KHM 139 Dat Mäken von Brakel .
