Hans-Jörg Uther

Hans-Jörg Uther (born July 20, 1944 in Herzberg am Harz ) is a German literary scholar and narrative researcher .

Life

Between 1969 and 1970 Uther studied at the University of Munich and between 1970 and 1973 at the University of Göttingen Folklore , German and History . In the last year of his studies he passed the first state examination for teaching at grammar schools. In 1971 he began working on the Encyclopedia of Fairy Tales for more than 40 years , initially as a student assistant, and from 1973 as an editor. In 1980 he received his doctorate with the dissertation Disabled in Popular Stories in Göttingen.

From 1990 to 1992 he was a lecturer at the University of Göttingen and from 1991 to 1994 at the University of Essen . In 1994 he completed his habilitation there in German studies, literary studies and folk literature . Since 2000 he has been an associate professor for German and literary studies in Essen. Since 2010 Uther has headed the research center of the Encyclopedia of Fairy Tales on a voluntary basis until the project was completed at the end of 2015.

Uther published on comparative and historical narrative research, on children's and youth literature , on folklore image research as well as on type, material and motive research. From 1989 to 2002 he was editor of the series The Fairy Tales of World Literature by Eugen Diederichs Verlag, and since 1988 he has been co-editor of Fabula magazine . He also published two important editions of Grimm's Fairy Tales in 1996 and 2004 . In 2004, he revised the Aarne and Thompson classification, which has since been referred to as the Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index . The common abbreviation is ATU. For the encyclopedia of fairy tales , Uther wrote 138 of the 4000 or so articles.

Uther has been a corresponding member of the Academy for Children's and Youth Literature in Volkach since 1992 and a Folklore Fellow ( Full Member ) of the Finnish Academy of Sciences in Helsinki since 1993 . He is also a member of the scientific advisory board of the Brothers Grimm Society in Kassel.
